Behind the story
The geographical landscape of this country was formed by many events in the Dreaming. This was a time when creatures were gigantic and could fly and travel anywhere. Naturally when the giant creatures move, or struggle with each other, the earth is moved. Mountains are formed and destroyed. River systems are created. The great animal battle featured in The Pelican Dreaming is told by communities all around Australia, albeit with different protagonists. This one features the Willy Wagtail as central to the battle. The dolphin leads the creatures of the sea, the sand goanna leads the land animals, with the sparrow hawk rallying the birds. Although some fierce wrestling ensues, the story ends with everyone realising the folly of their ways.
