Behind the story
Often sacred Aboriginal landscapes are unknown to the modern non-Aboriginal population who live and work right beside them. The Moon Turtle Dreaming celebrates an ancient dancing ground, Jarriparilla, which happens to be on the land adjoining one of Australia’s most iconic hotels, the JW Marriott on the Gold Coast. In this book the dancing ground comes back to life in the imagination of an inquisitive young hotel guest called Scarlett. Prompted by the story told to her by her Aboriginal guide Ranger Kirra, Scarlett can see the dancers in all their traditional glory. Through her minds’ eye she shows the readers the elaborate costumes that made the dances such a visual treat. We also learn about some of the characterisations Aboriginal groups attributed to turtles, underpinning a heartwarming conservation message for young readers.
